Pérez-Reverte has gone viral again on X (formerly Twitter). This time, his reflection begins with a clear connotation: “If it sounds like a state is being demolished...” and ends with a straightforward warning: “...not one stone will be left standing.”
Many interpret the tweet as a direct criticism of the amnesty agreements the government has made with nationalist and independence forces, which have led to controversial laws. Reverte's statement doesn't mention any names, but that's not necessary: the acidic author's readers know perfectly well who he's referring to. "When the rabbits in the hat run out," he says, "there won't be one stone left standing."
If it sounds like a state is being demolished, it certainly looks like a state is being demolished, and it seems to everyone that a state is being demolished, there's no doubt that a state is being demolished. When the rabbits in the hat run out, not one stone will be left standing.

Although the writer is a regular on social media, he has rarely generated such unanimity among his followers. The tweet has garnered hundreds of responses: "It's a shame the alternatives are more of the same but in a different light," "Tell me what can be done," and "Socially, we're better off. Maybe their interests aren't the same as mine," are just some of the responses.
The general reaction has gone beyond the author's usual ideological milieu. Even users who don't usually agree with him have expressed concern about what they consider a worrying shift in the state's architecture.
Pérez-Reverte himself did not add any further comments after the tweet, true to his style of throwing stones and letting everyone draw their own conclusions.
